We’re Sarah and Agatha, a creative team who met at SCA 2.0 in 2021.
We want to get BSL on Duolingo. This idea first came to us when we were doing research and discovered that BSL had just become a legally recognised language in April 2022. We were shocked – wasn’t it already considered a real language, equal to others? Well, apparently not.
There’s a lack of awareness of BSL, and the everyday challenges faced by the Deaf community in the UK.
Agatha had taken BSL lessons a while back, but these classes were in-person. In today’s digital age, to get anyone learning a new language, it needs to be convenient and at your fingertips.
We had a look into this and immediately checked the Holy Grail of foreign language apps: Duolingo. Turns out, they don’t teach any sign language.
Let’s change that.
